Financial Friday: America Saves encourages, motivates low- to moderate-income households to save

America Saves, a campaign managed by the non-profit Consumer Federation of America, seeks to motivate, encourage, and support low- to moderate-income households to save money, reduce debt, and build wealth. The research-based campaign uses the principles of behavioral economics and social marketing to change savings behavior. Non-profit, government, and corporate groups participate in America Saves nationally and through local, regional, and statewide campaigns around the country. America Saves encourages individuals and families to take the America Saves pledge and organizations to promote savings year-round and during America Saves Week.

The campaign provides free financial tools, savings services, advice, and resources that help Americans from every income level take the steps needed to take charge of their finances and manage money more effectively.


  • America Saves Pledge: Individuals that have a savings plan are twice more likely to spend less than they earn and save the difference, have sufficient emergency savings, and be saving enough for retirement. Through the America Saves Pledge individuals create their savings plan by identifying a goal, an amount to save, and a time frame to save for. Your organization can help individuals to save by providing them with the opportunity to take the America Saves Pledge without leaving your website. America Saves will be able to track how many individuals pledge to save through your form and report aggregate information back to you.
  • Email and Text Message Support: When individuals take the America Saves Pledge they receive emails and text messages to support their savings. Text messages come in the form of tips and reminders to save and are based on the goal individuals choose when they take the pledge.
  • Partner Resource Packets: About every six weeks, America Saves provides organizations with a resource packet that focuses on one aspect of saving. This material helps organizations communicate with the public, their constituents, and other organizations about how they promote and encourage saving. Each packet includes: A guest post from America Saves, social media content, and tools and resources.
  • America Saves Week: Each year America Saves, along with the American Savings Education Council, coordinates America Saves Week — an annual opportunity for organizations to promote good savings behavior and a chance for individuals to assess their own saving status. Typically thousands of organizations participate in the Week, reaching millions of people. America Saves Week will be held Feb. 27 – March 4, 2017. Learn more at

To reach and impact as many individuals as possible, America Saves relies on organizations to promote savings information. It asks organizations like yours to promote the America Saves Pledge and to use the partner resource packets to promote savings to your constituents, members, and customers throughout the year.


  • Improving the saver experience: Last February, we piloted communications tailored to the goal savers choose when they take the America Saves pledge. Savers interacted with these communications 6 to 8 times more than our traditional communications. In addition we are launching challenges this summer to encourage people to take financial action and to start real conversations with them.
  • New partnerships: America Saves is working with the National Disability institute to provide families and individuals with disabilities information on how they can save successfully and take advantage of new ABLE accounts.
