NJCFE Financial Literacy Roundtable a Success!

Manalapan, N. J. - On July 13th, 2018, the NJCFE held a Financial Literacy Roundtable to discuss up-and-coming topics in which educators should be interested. Attendees included educators, non-profit employees, and credit union representatives. Before getting into the heart of the matter, participants engaged in a fun icebreaker activity that required them to provide a financial tip in the style of a license plate.

The formal part of the meeting began with presentations from three cryptocurrency experts: Shamim Naqvi, CEO and founder of, Jamil Hassan, bestselling author, and Goutham Puppala, Chief Architect at These experts explained several of the intricacies of cryptocurrency, the "money of the future," and the blockchains that serve as a public financial transaction database. For example, they touched upon the trust model of bitcoin, what role financial intermediaries play in the blockchain, and the ethical complications that arise when using this type of technology. A lively discussion of the merits and demerits of cryptocurrency ensued.

Dr. Barbara O’Neill gave a presentation on the Trump Administration’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. She thoroughly reviewed all sections of the Act, discussed how it would impact taxpayers, and gave strategies to maintain financial wellbeing. She also provided several helpful resources to aid in financial planning.

The NJCFE has several additional events planned for later in the year. In August, Financial Education Boot Camps are going to be held on the 1st and 2nd in North and South Jersey. Monthly webinars will also continue through the end of the year. In the fall, you won't want to miss the Atlantic City Career Fair on September 13th, the 2018 Fall Financial Education Institute on November 8-10, or the Financial Literacy Symposium on November 8th.
