The Together North Jersey implementation kick-off event on May 2, 2016 will feature two high-profile keynote speakers to inspire and motivate us to action!

Mitchell J. Silver, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Parks, will open up the event. Commissioner Silver was appointed in 2014 by Mayor de Blasio and is also the immediate past president of the American Planning Association (APA).

Known by his colleagues as a passionate communicator, creative thinker, problem-solver and visionary leader, Mitchell Silver has been at the center of many cutting edge trends, innovative solutions and visionary plans. As president of APA, he led an international effort to elevate the value and rebirth of planning in the 21st century.  When Mayor Bill de Blasio named Mitchell Silver as New York City's Parks Commissioner, he called him “a visionary.” The Mayor went on to say:  “He has a passion for fairness and equality, and he brings it to the work of government, and understands that we have to ensure that parks and open spaces are available in every community, and are well-maintained in every community in this city.”

Gil Penalosa, renowned planner and advocate will follow the Commissioner.  Gil is passionate about cities for all people and works with decision makers and communities around the world to create vibrant cities and healthy communities for everyone regardless of social, economic, or ethnic background. His focus is the design and use of parks and streets as great public places, as well as sustainable mobility: walking, cycling and use of public transit.  As Executive Director of the Canadian non-profit organization 8-80 Cities for the past 8 years, Gil has worked in over 150 different cities in all continents. As former Commissioner of Parks, Sport and Recreation for the City of Bogota, Colombia, Gil successfully led the design and development of over 200 parks created the Summer Festival, with over 100 events in 10 days and also initiated the “new Ciclovia”— a program that sees over 1 million people walk, run, skate and bike along 121 kilometers of Bogotá’s city roads every Sunday.  Today the "new Ciclovia" is internationally recognized and emulated around the work, including in the Together North Jersey region!

And don't forget, TNJ 2.0 will also feature:
  • A panel of TNJ’s local planning partners, sharing success stories about how they’ve implemented projects.
  • An overview of what we have planned (so far) for Together North Jersey 2.0 and how you can be involved.
  • A networking reception to celebrate all that we’ve already accomplished!
