The SIFMA Foundation’s InvestWrite Competition

BACKGROUND:

InvestWrite is an innovative national writing competition, sponsored by the SIFMA Foundation and McGraw Hill Financial. The InvestWrite competition invites students who participate in the SIFMA Foundation’s Stock Market Game™ (SMG) program to submit essays applying the concepts they’ve learned in the classroom to real life investment scenarios. SMG is an online educational activity for students in grades 4-12 that has served over 15 million students since its inception in 1977.  SMG introduces students to the financial markets with its integrated curriculum as they learn math, economics and the importance of long-term saving and investing while practicing teamwork, communication and leadership skills.  Independent studies show that students who participate in the SMG program score significantly higher than their peers on standard mathematics exams and on tests measuring their financial literacy.  Exciting prizes are awarded to the top InvestWrite students; their teachers and classrooms to encourage participation in this competitive educational program.

WHO:

The SIFMA Foundation is seeking industry volunteers to judge essay submissions from students in grades 4-12 who participate in The Stock Market Game™ InvestWrite essay competition. Judging is a simple process that will take about an hour of your time. Each volunteer receives 6 -8 essays with a maximum 700 - 1000 words each; depending on grade level. Judging takes place entirely online. No meetings! No phone calls! All contact takes place via email and on the InvestWrite website.

HOW: Register online at: www.investwrite.org/judges

WHEN: The next round of judging begins Friday, April 10, 2015. The deadline to register as a volunteer is Friday, April 3, 2015. Judges are emailed shortly before the start to ensure that the registered judges can still participate. If not, they are invited to judge the following semester. Judges are asked to complete the judging process within 3 days of assignment.

The student should address the scenario using relevant terminology and display an understanding of the core concepts of the stock market in the scenario. Rationale – Is the essay thoughtful? The written argument should be presented in a manner that indicates that was a logical thinking process involved in addressing the assignment. Writing Style – Is the student’s work interesting to read? Does the written response encourage the reader to continue to communicate thoughts in an engaging and inviting manner, rather than focusing on grammar and spelling.
